Choosing Japanese caps and hats

Embroidered baseball caps

The embroidered caps put the detail on the side or the front. A crane in cream, gold and gray thread flies over a plum branch on the crane cap, with a red crown on its head and petals scattered across the brim. The plum blossom cap runs a flowering branch from the side of the crown down across the brim, white on black or black on white, with pink flowers on both. The lion dance cap keeps a 5 cm lion head on the left side and a red seal stamp on the front. The Taoist talisman cap stitches 敕令 in gold cursive across the front, with a brass slider and an extra-long strap at the back. On each one the embroidery is the only decoration, so the caps stay easy to wear.

Printed dragons and summer caps

Two caps print rather than stitch. The metallic dragon cap draws a dragon in fine silver lines across one side of the crown, with scales, whiskers and flames, and a column of calligraphy on the brim. The dragon print cap is thin polyester with rows of tiny holes punched through the brim and side panels to let air through, so it is the one for hot days. The metallic dragon cap is 85 g of cotton in black, beige or white; the vented cap comes in five colours. The gradient cap fades from one colour at the crown to another at the brim, with a bold brush-stroke M embroidered in black.

Japanese bucket hats

The Great Wave bucket hat is printed all over with curling waves and fine gold lines, and flips to black with red embroidered lettering. The blackletter hat threads a printed ribbon through two silver rings at the front and ties it in a bow at the back. The safety pin hat carries a large metal pin and five rings through its short brim. The lettering hat comes with RECLUSIVE in white or PARANOID in orange. The Great Wave hat comes in brown, red or blue, and the safety pin hat folds flat for a bag.

How to wear Japanese caps

A statement cap works best with a plain outfit. Wear the crane or talisman cap with a black or white tee, or pick up one colour from the embroidery elsewhere, such as the pink of the plum blossom or the red of the lion's seal. With a printed hoodie or a sukajan, choose a quieter cap so the two pieces do not compete. A cap is also the easiest way to try a motif before you commit to a jacket or a haori with the same print, and a white cap with black stitching reads cleaner in summer than a black one.

QUESTIONS

What head size do your caps fit?

Most baseball caps adjust to fit heads of 56 to 60 cm around, and the gradient cap starts at 54 cm. The bucket hats are one fixed size, for heads of about 55 to 58 cm.

How do I measure my head for a cap?

Wrap a soft tape around your head where the cap sits, just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead.

How deep are the crowns?

Between 10 and 12 cm on the baseball caps, with a 6 to 7.5 cm brim, so they sit at a medium height rather than tall.

Do caps and hats ship worldwide?

Yes. Like every order they are prepared in 3 days, and the product page shows the delivery dates for your country.
